Maths Fluency ideas

In maths in school, we have been enjoying Big Maths where we practise answering maths questions but have a timer to beat! Below are some ideas for improving your speed in answering maths questions and a couple of websites where you can have fun at the same time! Choose one area you would like to get better at, and have a go! Have fun!

1) Early maths : Number bonds to 5 eg 1 + 4 = 5

                                                               2 + 3 = 5

Double objects to find amounts to 10

Find and recognize half of objects to 10

2) Year 1: Learn all number bonds to 10  eg 1 + 9 = 10

                                                                       2 + 8 = 10

Double numbers and quantities to 10

Find and recognize half and a quarter of an object, shape or quantity.

3) Year 2: Fluently recall 2,5 and 10 times tables

Add and subtract 10 from a number

Add and subtract multiples of 10 eg  20 + 30 = 50

                                                           50 -20 = 30

Add units together fluently eg 6 + 5 , 7 + 4

Add  one digit numbers to two digit numbers  fluently eg  23 + 2, 41 + 3

Subtract one digit numbers from two digit numbers eg     30-5 =25 , 76 - 2 = 74

Add two digit numbers to two digit numbers  eg 32 + 43 =     27 + 31 =     (not bridging 10)

Divide numbers by 2, 5 and 10

There are lots of free sites where you can  practice these skills , I have included two below, but you might have preferred games and sites that you would rather use.

2. Reading - Please look at this page which helps to show what parents can do at home to support reading with their children.

Did you know that audible are now allowing free access to their children's book collection? Our reading for pleasure challenge is attached here. Short bursts of reading, or listening to others readers reading quality books is a really important way of maintaining children's literacy skills.

3. Phonics and spelling

Daily phonics lessons will be available on this link  every day. You can visit the lesson at any time after that for the next 12 weeks.

Y1 Phonics:

Please try to do one of the daily phonics lessons. The lessons are very similar to the ones your teachers would have been delivering if you were in school.

The lessons follow the letters and sounds programme which we use in school so will be a good way of practising phonics for Y1 children.

If you need advice on whether these lessons will be suitable for your child's current stage of phonics learning, please contact staff on class dojo.

Here is a document with further information about these lessons.

Y2: Improve your spelling with the Spelling Beats programme.

Join in a daily phonics lesson if it has been recommended by your teacher.

4. English

We all know and love the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'.

This week can you go on a hunt - for a bear? Or treasure? Or a unicorn? Or any other amazing thing you can think of?

Take some photos of you on your hunt and share them with your teacher.

Write about your hunt - can you copy the style of the original story?

Draw the illustrations to match your story.

You could even turn the whole thing into a lovely book to read with your adults.

Here's a link to the story if you want to listen to it again:

5. Mental Health Awareness week - the theme of this week is kindness. Can you complete some of these activities about being kind?

6. If you want to extend your learning the Oak National Academy (a government backed project) are delivering lessons online for Y1 and Y2. You can access them through the link below. This is in addition to what we have set as a school and we are signposting to them if you would like to use them. There is English, Maths and Foundation Subjects on there and the Oak Academy are adding more lessons each week.

Watch out for challenges on your dojo school story and class story too...

Please note that the White Rose, Oak Academy and BBC Bitesize websites are always much busier on a Monday morning and between 9-11am on other mornings. They become easier to access after this time, or later in the week. Please be patient and if you can, complete your learning, or download resources, at a different time. There are literally millions of people accessing the websites. We have set you additional tasks not on these websites to help you should you have problems with these ones.

Thanks for your understanding.

We hope you enjoy your learning this week and we would love to see what you get up to. Send your photos on dojo.
