At Wath Victoria we believe that children have an entitlement to high quality and well-planned reading provision. Our reading entitlement can be viewed here. We provide a reading rich environment throughout school. Children in all classes enjoy novels read by the class teacher, participate in guided reading sessions, whole class reading, individual reading and reading across other areas of the curriculum. This gives the children the opportunity to develop expression and extend their vocabulary, whilst learning a variety of other reading skills. A rigorous system enables children to develop their decoding skills and enhance their comprehension skills. All children are taught an explicit vocabulary curriculum. This includes the academic vocabulary needed for success in school and also subject specific and high frequency vocabulary. In addition to this, children in Y3 upwards have two weekly lessons on a digital vocabulary and reading platform, Bedrock. Details of this can be found here https://www.bedrocklearning.org/

Writing

Writing is a core subject at Wath Victoria. Basic skills like handwriting

and spelling are taught regularly so that the children become

confident in these building blocks of writing. Children are given a

range of cross curricular writing opportunities that provide the allow

them to apply the grammar and punctuation skills they have learned

in a meaningful, exciting and engaging context.

Children complete multiple drafts to achieve excellence as part of the Wath Victoria writing process. Children complete a launch pad write and then decide, with their teachers, which skills needs further development once they have analysed a model text. Skills are explicitly taught and children play a large part in developing their drafts through peer critique in the classroom.
